Hey gang…I want to flesh out my comment from last night regarding Lana Del Rey’s performance on “SNL.” If you read it, it’s not an endorsement of the performance in any way, shape or form. All I’m saying is that I find it hypocritical to bash her so hard for this, her first ever tv performance, while saying nothing when seasoned “pros” are constantly shitting the bed on live tv. It’s now sadly rare to hear a popular singer shred it live anytime, let alone on tv. Sometimes a singer is actually good but gets what I call “red light fever” and can’t pull it off on the tube. Nobody’s perfect and God knows I have a few tv performances I’m not thrilled about. But there are plenty of popular singers who prove time and time again that they CAN’T sing in tune…period….and yet no one throws a flag. Some of the public can tell when someone can’t cut it and plenty of the public is tone deaf and mistake energy or a bitchin’ outfit for a killer performance. It doesn’t mean they didn’t sing horrifically. All I’m saying is if you’re going to go on a tirade about how bad Lana’s tv debut was, but you give a pass to the unlistenable performance by the veteran platinum-selling male country artist on the CMA show, you either don’t know what you’re talking about or truly have selective hearing.
To end on a positive note, do yourself a favor: go to YouTube and watch any live performance you can find by Dave Grohl, Bryan Adams, Vince Gill, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Tony Bennett or JamesTaylor (to name a few) and take a moment to give silent or audible props to what being a vocal badass is all about.
