Richard Marx
1 / 1
THE minute Richard Marx walked on stage at the Arena Of Stars in Genting Highlands last Sunday night, the audience was spellbound.
The pop singer-songwriter casually came on stage, picked up his guitar, said a quick greeting, and started his show. Then the thunderous applause began.
It was only the beginning of a night filled with soft, slow ballads, that was Marx’s trademark sound, interjected with catchy, pop rock numbers.
The night started with Endless Summer Nights, followed by his earlier hits, such as Satisfied, Hazard and Angelia. Marx also performed some of the songs that he wrote for other artistes, such as To Where You Are (written for Josh Groban) and Best Of Me (which he co-wrote with David Foster and Jeremy Lubbock).
The 48-year-old musician entertained the crowd with only his guitar, the piano and his smooth vocals, with the occasional appearance of fellow musician Steve Hornbeak, and also a special video which included his three sons in the background playing back-up music and vocals.
He also performed his best-loved ballads, Hold On To The Nights and Now And Forever, which managed to reduce at least one of his fans to tears.
Also included in the list of songs was his new single, When You Loved Me, from his 2011 compilation album Stories to Tell.
Ever the gentleman performer, Marx went down and walked among his delighted fans, singing to them and even managed to kiss a baby girl, that, according to Marx, “Turned away from me… just like a woman”.
Marx proved that he still has what it takes as he worked his magic on the crowd and chatted to them continuously, showing glimpses of the person behind the music artiste.
The crowd warmed up to this amazing singer, who for the next two hours kept them laughing and singing along with him, as he sang the songs that many in the audience grew up with.
He even sang a duet with his opening act, our own indie artiste, Liyana Fizi, and performed the song he wrote for N’Sync — This I promise You, which Liyana later described as “surreal”.
Marx saved the best for last when he sang the all-time favourite, Right Here Waiting, before making his final exit.
The singer is continuing his World Tour 2011 in China this week and is scheduled to perform in Wu Han (tomorrow) and Beijing (Sunday).
Richard Marx World Tour 2011 Malaysia was brought in by Splendid Entertainment with the New Straits Times as the official newspaper.
